What is Pitch Hit and Run and Why do we do it?

What is Pitch, Hit, and Run and why do we participate?

Pitch Hit and Run is a baseball and softball skills competition for children ages 7 to 14. It is organized to be a series of Local, Regional, and National competitions that feature competitors pitching at a target, running from second base to home plate, and hitting off a tee. The competition is free to enter, and offers competitors the opportunity to earn a chance to compete at a national level against players from all over North America.

In years past, players advanced from a local competition to a regional competition and then to a Team competition - which is hosted at a Major League stadium. Team Championships for our area are hosted at Fenway Park, and often include free tickets to a Red Sox Game for the player and a chaperone. There are 32 Team Championships featuring the  top 3 players from each region. After the Team competitions, the top 3 Team Champions in each age group are invited to participate in the National Finals. Prior to 2020, those finals were held at the MLB All Star Game and finalists earned a free trip to the All Star Weekend for themselves and a chaperone. This year, as a result of Covid 19, the finals will be held in November during one of the World Series games!

In 2019, CWLL player August Backman became the first Vermont player to compete (and win!) at the National Championships. Aside from the fanfare of getting the opportunity to attend the MLB All Star weekend for free, this opportunity proves that players from any small town in North America have a chance to be recognized for their skills!

This year we will once again provide a local PHR competition in mid June, and hopefully a CWLL player will return to the Team or National Championship!
